พระธาตุสวนตาล เป็นสถูปหรือเจดีย์ประธานของวัดธาตุสวนตาล ซึ่งบรรจุพระบรมสารีริกธาตุของพระพุทธเจ้า ก่อด้วยอิฐฉาบด้วยพระทาย (การนำหินมาบดหรือตำให้ละเอียดผสมกับน้ำอ้อย ยางบงหนังควายแห้งเผาไฟ ผสมกันในหลุมดินแล้วตำให้ละเอียดเป็นเนื้อเดียวกัน) จะมีคุณภาพคล้ายกับปูนซีเมนต์ รูปทรงเลียนแบบพระธาตุพนม ฐานกว้าง 30 ฟุต สูง 60 ฟุต
ลักษณะเด่น- สถูปหรือเจดีย์ประธานของวัดก่อด้วยอิฐฉาบด้วยพระทาย – เรือโบราณอายุประมาณ 300 ปี ประวัติโดยสร้างขึ้นมาราวพุทธศตวรรษที่ 22-23 เป็นเวลาใกล้เคียงกับการสร้างพระธาตุพนม และการพังทลายขององค์พระธาตุก็ใกล้เคียงกัน คือพระธาตุสวนตาลพังทลายลงเมื่อ 23 กรกฎาคม 2518 เวลา 19.30 น. ตรงกับวันเพ็ญเดือน 8 (วันอาสาฬหบูชา) ส่วนพระธาตุพนมพังทลายเมื่อ 11 สิงหาคม 2518 เวลา 17.00 น. ตรงกับวันขึ้น 4 ค่ำ เดือน 9 ห่างกันเพียง 18 วัน พระธาตุสวนตาลได้รับการบูรณะซ่อมแซม โดยการสร้างพระธาตุองค์ใหม่ครอบองค์เดิมไว้ และพระธาตุองค์เดิมก็ยังสามารถเข้าไปกราบสักการบูชาเพื่อเป็นสิริมงคลได้อีกด้วย
