องค์พระธาตุหันหน้าไปทางหนองหานในทางทิศตะวันออก เป็นเจดีย์ก่ออิฐถือปูน รูปทรงสี่เหลี่ยม สูง 24 เมตรเศษ ฐานเป็นรูปสี่เหลี่ยม ส่วนบนเป็นทรงบัวเหลี่ยม ไม่มีลวดลายประดับ ที่ฐานเจดีย์ มีซุ้มประตูทั้งสี่ด้าน ยอดฉัตรทองคำเหนือองค์พระธาตุเชิงชุมทำด้วยทองคำบริสุทธิ์มีน้ำหนัก 247 บาท ซุ้มยอดประตูมีลักษณะเป็นยอดปราสาท ข้างในทึบสร้างด้วยศิลาแลง และหินทรายแดง ซุ้มประตูหลอกแบบขอม ด้านทิศ เหนือ ใต้ และตะวันตก ซุ้มประตูทางเข้าจริงด้านทิศตะวันออก
แต่แรกเริ่มพระธาตุเชิงชุมคงเป็นปราสาทหินทรายศิลปะสมัยขอม ภายในกรอบประตูทางเข้าอุโมงค์ด้านขวามือ มีจารึกพระธาตุเชิงชุมอักษรขอมโบราณ ราวพุทธศตวรรษที่ 16 องค์พระธาตุในปัจจุบันเป็นศิลปะล้านช้าง เนื่องจากช่วงที่อิทธิพลของอาณาจักรล้านช้างแผ่เข้ามาบริเวณภาคอีสานของไทย ราวพุทธศตวรรษที่ 19 และได้มีการบูรณะองค์พระธาตุขึ้นมาใหม่
