สวนพฤกษศาสตร์ ขอนแก่น ตั้งอยู่ที่ทุ่งพึงพืด ในพื้นที่ 2 ตำบล คือ ตำบลหัวทุ่งและตำบลเพ็กใหญ่ อำเภอพล จังหวัดขอนแก่น ห่างจาอำเภอพลประมาณ 12 กิโลเมตร เป็นสาขาสวนพฤกษศาสตร์สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ ทำหน้าที่รวบรวมพรรณไม้ประจำถิ่นและข้อมูลพืชของภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ เป็นศูนย์ทดลองสาธิตและวิจัยพืชเศรษฐกิจและพืชทนเค็ม โดยความร่วมมือกับนักวิจัยจากสถาบันในภูมิภาคให้เป็นสถานที่ศึกษาอบรมของนักเรียน นักศึกษาจากสถาบันการศึกษาในภูมิภาค เป็นสถานที่พักผ่อนหย่อนใจในธรรมชาติ แหล่งสันทนาการและท่องเที่ยวเชิงนิเวศ
องค์การสวนพฤกษศาสตร์ได้เล็งเห็นความสำคัญของการอนุรักษ์ทรัพยากรพืชให้ได้สมบูรณ์ที่สุด และมีประสิทธิภาพสูงสุด รวมทั้งการให้บริการความรู้ด้านพฤกษศาสตร์แก่ส่วนรวมอย่างทั่วถึง จึงมีนโยบายจัดตั้งศูนย์รวมพรรณไม้ประจำภูมิภาคต่างๆของประเทศไทยจำนวน 5 แห่ง ซึ่งมีภารกิจหลัก เป็นศูนย์รวมพรรณไม้ วิจัยและการท่องเที่ยวเชิงอนุรักษ์ในส่วนของภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ องค์การสวนพฤกษศาสตร์ได้ทำการสำรวจพื้นที่ทุ่งพึงพืดอำเภอพล จังหวัดขอนแก่น พบว่าพื้นที่ที่เหมาะสมในการจัดตั้งเป็นศูนย์รวมพรรณไม้ประจำภูมิภาค จึงได้เข้าดำเนินการในพื้นที่ตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2545 – ปัจจุบัน โดยใช้ชื่อว่าศูนย์รวมพรรณไม้ภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ จังหวัดขอนแก่นและปัจจุบันเปลี่ยนชื่อเป็นสวนพฤกษศาสตร์ขอนแก่น
Khon Kaen Botanical Garden is located at Thung Phueng Phuet in 2 sub-districts, Hua Thung Subdistrict and Pek Yai Subdistrict, Phon District, Khon Kaen Province. The Botanic Garden Organization recognizes the importance of preserving plant resources to the fullest extent. and maximum efficiency as well as providing comprehensive botanical knowledge services to the public Therefore, there is a policy to establish 5 plant centers in different regions of Thailand, which have the main mission. is the center of plants Research and ecotourism in the northeastern part The Botanical Garden Organization has surveyed the area of Thung Phueng Phueak, Phon District. Khon Kaen Province It was found that the area suitable for establishing a regional plant center Therefore, it has operated in the area since 2002 – the present under the name of the Northeastern Plant Center. Khon Kaen Province and now the name is changed to Khon Kaen Botanical Garden.
