แหล่งโบราณคดีบ้านกู่จาน ยโสธร อยู่ในเขตตำบลกู่จาน อำเภอคำเขื่อนแก้ว มีหลักฐานทางโบรารคดีกระจายอยู่ในพื้นที่ ๓ บริเวณด้วยกันคือ
บริเวณดงปู่ตา อยู่ทางด้านทิศเหนือของบ้านกู่จาน พบใบเสมาจำนวน ๑๐ ใบ ทำจากหินทรายแดง รูปทรงด้านบนคล้ายกลีบดอกบัว บริเวณกึ่งกลางใบสลักลวดลายเป็นสันนูน และลายยอดสถูปเทินเหนือหม้อน้ำปูรณฆฏะที่มีความหมายแทนองค์สถูป ใบเสมาเหล่านี้ปักอยู่ในลักษณะเดิมทั้งหมด และยังพบใบเสมารูปแปดเหลี่ยมอีก ๑ ใบ ทำด้วยศิลาแลง เส้นผ่าศูนย์กลางประมาณ ๘๐ เซ็นติเมตร สูง ๑ เมตรเศษ
บริเวณดอนกู่ มีศาสนสถานที่ได้รับอิทธิพลจากวัฒนธรรมเขมร ลักษณะเป็นปราสาทก่อด้วยศิลาแลงและอิฐ สร้างขึ้นประมาณ พุทธศตวรรษที่ ๑๗ – ๑๘ สมัยพระเจ้าชัยวรมันที่ ๗ แผนผังอาคารประกอบด้วยปราสาทประธาน บรรณาลัย และสระน้ำ ปัจจุบันตัวปราสาทเหลือเพียงอิฐรูปทรงสี่เหลี่ยมจตุรัส กว้างด้านละ ๗ เมตร ด้านตะวันออกของปราสาทเป็นบรรณาลัยก่อด้วยศิลาแลง สระน้ำอยู่ทางด้านตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือของปราสาท เป็นสระรูปสี่เหลี่ยมจตุรัส บริเวณตัวปราสาทมีแท่นฐานทรงสี่เหลี่ยมผืนผ้า สันนิษฐานว่าเป็นที่ประดิษฐานรูปเคารพ ๓ องค์ ที่เรียกว่า รัตนตรัยมหายาน ประกอบด้วยพระพุทธรูปปางนาคปรกอยู่ตรงกลาง พระโพธิสัตว์อวโลกิเตศวร และนางปรัชญาปารมิตาขนาบอยู่สองข้าง
ลักษณะแผนผังอาคารคล้ายองค์ประกอบศาสนสถานที่เรียกว่า อโรคยาศาล หรือโรงพยาบาล ที่พระเจ้าชัยวรมันที่ ๗ ให้สร้างขึ้น ณ สถานที่ต่าง ๆ จำนวน ๑๐๒ แห่ง ใช้สำหรับเป็นสถานพยาบาลประชาชนที่เจ็บป่วย มีพบอยู่ทั่วไปในเขมร และไทย
วัดกู่จาน เมื่อประมาณ ๒๐๐ ปีมาแล้ว มีชาวลาวอพยพมาตั้งถิ่นฐานที่บ้านกู่จาน ห่างจากองค์พระธาตุไปทางทิศตะวันตก ได้บูรณะพระธาตุเก่าที่มีอยู่เดิมตลอดมา องค์พระธาตุเป็นรูปทรงสี่เหลี่ยมจตุรัส มีลักษณะทางสถาปัตยกรรมแบบอีสาน (ล้านช้าง) คือมีส่วนยอดธาตุเป็นทรงบัวเหลี่ยม ฐานพระธาตุต่ำลักษณะเป็นฐานบัว ประกอบด้วยบัวคว่ำบัวหงายเตี้ย ๆ ส่วนท้องไม้มีลูกแก้วอกไก่คั่นกลาง องค์เรือนธาตุค่อนข้างสูงไม่มีลวดลาย ส่วนยอดธาตุเป็นทรงบัวเหลี่ยมซ้อนทับกันสองชั้น มีกลีบบัวประดับส่วนโคนของพุ่มบัวเหลี่ยม ยอดบนสุดประดับด้วยฉัตร
