พระอารามหลวงใจกลางจังหวัดศรีสะเกษ วัดมหาพุทธาราม หรือวัดพระโต เป็นวัดเก่าแก่คู่บ้านคู่เมืองศรีสะเกษโดยแท้ เพราะสร้างขึ้นตั้งแต่เมื่อพระยาวิเศษภักดี (ชม) เจ้าเมืองศรีสะเกษคนที่สอง ย้ายเมืองจากบ้านโนนสามขามาอยู่ในพื้นที่ปัจจุบัน
พระพุทธรูปสำคัญที่ประดิษญานในวัดมหาพุทธารามคือหลวงพ่อโต ไม่มีหลักฐานว่าสร้างขึ้นเมื่อใด แต่พอสันนิษฐานได้ว่าเป็นพระพุทธรูปซึ่งได้รับการค้นพบระหว่างก่อตั้งเมืองใหม่ แต่เดิมไม่ได้มีขนาดเท่าทุกวันนี้ มีการสร้างเสริมจากองค์จริงเข้าไปใหม่หลายครั้ง จนปัจจุบันหน้าตักกว่า 3.5 เมตร สูง 6.85 เมตร และพื้นที่ที่พบหลวงพ่อโตครั้งแรกก็ได้สร้างเป็นวัดมหาพุทธารามนี่เอง
