พิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ ขอนแก่น เริ่มก่อสร้างเมื่อปี พ.ศ. ๒๕๑๐ เพื่อเป็นสถานที่รวบรวม สงวนรักษาและจัดแสดงโบราณวัตถุ ศิลปวัตถุ ซึ่งเป็นสมบัติทางวัฒนธรรมของชาติในเขตภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือตอนบน ต่อมา พ.ศ. ๒๕๑๑ – ๒๕๑๒ ได้รับงบประมาณจัดซื้อครุภัณฑ์และก่อสร้างอาคาร พ.ศ. ๒๕๑๕ ดำเนินการจัดแสดงแล้วเสร็จ พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลยเดช และสมเด็จพระบรมโอรสาธิราชสยามมกุฎราชกุมาร ได้เสด็จพระราชดำเนินทรงเปิดพิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ ขอนแก่น เมื่อวันที่ ๒๐ ธันวาคม ๒๕๑๕ ต่อมา พ.ศ. ๒๕๓๕ กรมศิลปากรมีนโยบายที่จะพัฒนาและปรับปรุงพิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ ขอนแก่น ได้จัดสรรงบประมาณเพื่อก่อสร้างอาคารสำนักงานและห้องประชุมเป็นเงิน ๓,๐๐๐,๐๐๐.- บาท และ พ.ศ. ๒๕๓๖ จัดสรรงบประมาณ ๙๘๕,๓๐๐.- บาท จัดซื้อวัสดุและครุภัณฑ์เพื่อพัฒนาและปรับปรุงการจัดแสดงนิทรรศการถาวรภายในพิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ ขอนแก่น ให้สามารถตอบสนองต่อความต้องการของชุมชนในท้องถิ่นตามแนวทางการพัฒนากิจการพิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติสมัยใหม่ซึ่งเป็นนโยบายที่สำคัญของกรมศิลปากร พิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ ขอนแก่น จึงนับเป็นแหล่งเรียนรู้สำคัญอีกแห่งหนึ่งในท้องถิ่นสำหรับผู้ที่สนใจได้เข้ามาศึกษาเรื่องราวทางด้านประวัติศาสตร์ โบราณคดี วิถีชีวิต ประเพณีและวัฒนธรรมเพื่อสืบสานมรดกทางวัฒนธรรมให้ยังคงอยู่ต่อไป

The development of modern national museum affairs, which is an important policy of the Fine Arts Department. Khon Kaen National Museum is therefore considered another important learning center in the local area for those who are interested in studying the history, archaeology, lifestyle, traditions and culture in order to continue the cultural heritage.
