จังหวัดยโสธร เป็นจังหวัดที่มีประเพณีการปฏิบัติสืบเนื่องกันมาอย่างยาวนาน โดยเฉพาะประเพณีที่เกี่ยวข้องกับศาสนา ความเชื่อ และวิถีชีวิตของชาวยโสธร ซึ่งมีความเชื่อว่าโลกนั้นประกอบด้วย โลกมนุษย์ โลกเทวดา และโลกบาดาล โดยโลกมนุษย์อยู่ภายใต้อิทธิพลของโลกเทวดาซึ่งขาวอีสานเรียกเทวดาว่าพญาแถน ซึ่งพญาแถนมีอิทธิพลต่อ ฝน ฟ้า ลม หากมนุษย์ทำให้พญาแถนโปรดปรานหรือพอใจ ก็จะบันดาลให้ฝนตกต้องตามฤดูกาล จึงเกิดพิธีการบูชาพญาแถนโดยการใช้บั้งไฟ เพื่อแสดงการเคารพและเป็นการขอฝนจากพญาแถน อันเป็นที่มาของประเพณีบุญบั้งไฟจังหวัดยโสธรอันโด่งดัง จากตำนานเรื่องเล่าอันถือว่ามีความสำคัญต่อจังหวัดยโสธรดังกล่าวข้างต้น จังหวัดยโสธรจึงจัดสร้าง “วิมานพญาแถน” ขึ้นบริเวณลำทวนเพื่อใช้เป็นสถานที่ที่แสดงถึงวัฒนธรรมประเพณีของจังหวัด เป็นแหล่งท่องเที่ยวและแหล่งเรียนรู้ที่สำคัญของจังหวัด ซึ่งภายในวิมานพญาแถนนั้นประกอบไปด้วยสิ่งก่อสร้างที่สะท้อนถึงตำนานบุญบั้งไฟของยโสธร คือ อาคารวิมานพญาแถน อาคารพญานาค อาคารพญาคันคาก และประติมากรรมขบวนแห่บั้งไฟ สำหรับอาคารพญาคันคากที่เป็นจุดสนใจของนักท่องเที่ยวนั้น สร้างขึ้นเป็นรูปร่างพญาคันคาก มีความสูง 19 เมตร ภายในอาคารประกอบด้วยพื้นที่จัดนิทรรศการจำนวน 4 ชั้น ได้แก่
